Lace Pleated Calligraphy

Lace Pleated Calligraphy

Lace Pleated Calligraphy

The birth of "Lace Pleated Calligraphy" can be traced back to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This series presents textile sculptures in the form of calligraphy, using hardened lace as the medium. Lace, a gendered material, symbolizes various aspects of intimacy, mystery, romance, and sexual implications.

Inspired by Sophie Calle's works exploring personal experiences and intimacy, I created "Live Lace Pleated Calligraphy", an interactive creation involving the participation of the audience. I invited Asian female immigrants from various professions in Paris to choose a character representing their immigrant life or feelings. I created the chosen character in lace calligraphy on the spot, simultaneously interviewing them about the reasons for their selection, exploring themes of identity, privacy, and female self-perception in the context of immigration. In the end, the artwork is presented as a lace calligraphy sculpture alongside recorded narratives from the participants.

Creation Method of "Lace Pleated Calligraphy"
The primary creation method of "Lace Calligraphy" is the "Folding Brushstroke" technique. This technique, widely used in textile and fashion, involves using the folds of lace to replace traditional ink brushstrokes, constructing the brushstroke's form through the folds of the fabric. In the final stage of the artwork, I harden and fix the lace, creating a textile sculpture.

Textile sculpture, Polypterus lace, pleated and hardened, featuring the Chinese character "Dream", fixed on lace canvas, dimensions 50X50X15cm, created in 2024.

The audience member, Lily, chose the character "" (meng), which means "dream." I created this chosen word in lace calligraphy. Lily, an artist who has been living in Paris for 18 years, explained why she chose this word: "Sometimes I feel my life in Paris is unreal, like a dream. Maybe one day when I wake up, I am back in Hong Kong. Maybe my whole experience in Paris is just a dream, who knows? I think about a story from Tang dynasty literature, 'The Governor of Nanke's Dream.' This artwork explores the theme of life and death. In Chunyu Fen's dream, he finds himself appointed as the governor of Nanke, navigating through the ups and downs of life. It's only upon awakening that he realizes it was all an illusion. As the saying goes: 'If life is but a dream, death is to wake up.'"

Happy Nut, moved to Paris 20 years ago and has worked in marketing, acting, and modeling. Now, she is a Chinese language teacher. She chose the word "Open" to represent her immigrant life in Paris, I created lace calligraphy.
She explained, "Life in Paris has its ups and downs, its boredom and its joys. As one grows older, one must learn to be open-minded. Unhappy things should be quickly forgotten. By replacing 'closed' with 'open,' one can open up one's mind and vision to see the world and connect with different people. It's about letting go of emotional burdens. One should be optimistic and open-minded. So, 'Open' represents a state of my life in Paris."

Crystal, a sinology book editor who has been living in Paris for 5 years, remarked: "My first impression of lace is mystery. My personality is rather chaotic, and I believe that the meaning of life is without an answer, much like my days in Paris."

Xiaohuasheng, who retired early and has been living in Paris for six months, shared:
"I love Paris because I adore its artistic culture and the atmosphere of freedom. I have lacked parental love since childhood, and after divorcing my ex-husband, I opened a restaurant and single-handedly raised my children for twenty years, achieving success in my career. Due to the pandemic, three of my restaurants in Taipei closed, and at that time, my long-term relationship with my boyfriend also fell apart. Later, I met my current husband, who loves me deeply, accepts me, and allows me to experience the most fulfilling love, happiness, and security. He also taught me to love myself again. Knowing how much I love Paris, he decided to move to Paris with me. Life is a healing process of love, and the biggest lesson in life is learning to love and be loved."

Hardened polyester lace, pleated Chinese character "" (Eternity), fixed on lace canvas, dimensions 70X50X20cm, created in 2024.

I used the "Eight Principles of the Character 'Yong'" as the foundation for the "Folding Brushstroke" technique. The first lace calligraphy work is the character "永" (Yong). Traditionally, mastering the character "" is considered the beginning of mastering basic calligraphy skills. Through creating the character "," I established three-dimensional folding methods for each brushstroke, serving as an exploration of the "Folding Brushstroke" technique in "Lace Calligraphy."
